Feature: The OK Dinghy - The New Zealand Dominance (Boating NZ)

Published Sat 11 Jul 2026

Boating New Zealand has published a great long-form feature on the history of the OK Dinghy in this country, tracing nearly 70 years of the class from its 1956 Danish origins through to today's active fleets in Auckland, Napier and Wellington. Written by John Macfarlane, the article charts New Zealand's remarkable record of 13 OK World Championship wins since 1973, profiling the sailors who built that legacy — from the late Clive Roberts, who claimed our first OK Worlds title in 1973, through to Leith Armit's four world titles, and more recent champions Karl Purdie, Matt Stechmann and Dan Slater.

NZOKDA President Steve McDowell also features in the piece, discussing this year's Worlds at Lake Garda and looking ahead to the 2029 World Championship, which will be hosted right here in Napier.

It's a great read for anyone interested in the history and future of our class.
